Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about artificial turf installation, cost, maintenance, and more.

General Questions

What is artificial turf made of?

Modern artificial turf is made from synthetic fibers, typically polyethylene or polypropylene, attached to a durable backing material. The fibers are UV-stabilized to resist fading and designed to mimic the look and feel of natural grass. Infill materials like silica sand or crumb rubber are added between the blades for cushion and stability.

How long does artificial turf last?

High-quality artificial turf typically lasts 15 to 25 years with proper care. The exact lifespan depends on the turf product, the amount of foot traffic, and how well it is maintained. Most of the products we install come with manufacturer warranties of 8 to 15 years.

Is artificial turf pet-friendly?

Absolutely. We install pet-specific turf products that feature antimicrobial backing and enhanced drainage systems. Solid waste is easy to pick up, and liquids drain straight through the turf and base layer. The turf will not develop brown spots or bare patches from pet use, and it is easy to rinse clean.

Does artificial turf get hot in the sun?

Artificial turf can get warm on hot days, similar to any outdoor surface exposed to direct sunlight. However, newer turf products use cooling technology that reflects heat rather than absorbing it. A quick spray with a garden hose will cool the surface immediately. Shaded areas and turf with lighter color tones also stay noticeably cooler.

Is artificial turf eco-friendly?

Yes, in several important ways. Artificial turf eliminates the need for watering, which can save a typical San Diego household thousands of gallons of water per year. It also removes the need for gas-powered mowers, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Many turf products are made from recyclable materials, and the long lifespan further reduces environmental impact over time.

Installation

How long does installation take?

Most residential turf installations take 1 to 3 days depending on the size and complexity of the project. A standard front or back yard typically takes 1 to 2 days. Larger projects with custom features like putting greens, slopes, or multiple zones may take 3 days or more. We will give you a clear timeline during your free estimate.

What is the installation process?

Our process starts with removing the existing lawn and grading the soil. We then compact a base layer of decomposed granite or class II road base, and lay the turf on top. Seams are glued and secured, edges are trimmed and nailed, and infill is spread and brushed into the fibers. Every project ends with a final walkthrough to make sure everything meets your expectations.

Do you remove the existing lawn?

Yes, lawn removal is included in every installation. We remove the existing grass, roots, and topsoil to the proper depth, then haul away all the debris. This ensures a clean, level surface for the new base and turf.

Can you install turf on slopes or hills?

Yes. We regularly install turf on slopes and hillsides throughout North County San Diego. Sloped installations require additional base preparation and anchoring to prevent movement, and we use specialized techniques to ensure proper drainage and a secure fit. Turf on slopes also helps with erosion control.

What type of base do you use?

We use class II road base or decomposed granite, compacted in layers to create a firm, level surface with proper drainage. The base is the most important part of a turf installation because it determines how well the turf drains, how flat it lays, and how long it lasts. We never skip or shortcut the base layer.

Cost and Maintenance

How much does artificial turf cost?

Artificial turf installation typically ranges from $8 to $15 per square foot, including materials, base preparation, and labor. The final cost depends on the size of the area, the type of turf product, site conditions, and any custom features. We provide free on-site estimates so you get an accurate price for your specific project.

What maintenance does artificial turf need?

Very little. Occasional rinsing with a hose keeps the turf clean and fresh. Brushing the fibers with a stiff broom once or twice a month helps them stand upright. Remove leaves and debris as needed. Pet owners may want to rinse more frequently. There is no mowing, watering, fertilizing, or edging required.

Do you offer financing?

We can discuss payment options during your consultation. Contact us for details on current options.

What warranty do you provide?

All of our installations come with a workmanship warranty, and the turf products we use carry manufacturer warranties typically ranging from 8 to 15 years. The exact warranty depends on the turf product you choose. We will go over all warranty details during your consultation so there are no surprises.

Does artificial turf increase home value?

In most cases, yes. A professionally installed turf lawn improves curb appeal, eliminates ongoing water and maintenance costs, and creates a clean, year-round green space. In Southern California where water costs are high and drought restrictions are common, artificial turf is increasingly seen as a smart investment by homebuyers.
